Cycling: Alberto Dainese won the eleventh stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Italian surprisingly won in the mass sprint ahead of Fernando Gaviria.
Dainese wins first Grand Tour stage
As expected, little happened on the eleventh stage of the Giro d'Italia. The storyline is quickly told: runaways without a chance broke away from the main field and were of course caught in time on the flat course. Then it came to the mass sprint. But this one had it all. Because the top favorites ended up in places four to six. Arnaud Demare (Groupama – FDJ), Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) and Mark Cavendish (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) had to admit defeat today. Surprisingly, the Italian won Alberto Dainese (DSM) before Fernando Gaviria (UAE) and Simone Consonni (Cofidis). The German came in a strong ninth place on the 203-kilometer stage from Santarcangelo di Romagna to Reggio Emilia Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious). Spain remains the leader in the standings Juan Pedro Lopez placeholder image (Trek – Segafredo). Now, however, he leads in front of the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers), who was able to earn a three-second time bonus in a sprint rating.
