Tektro ED 9: New 9-speed E-Drive shifting system for less wear

27 January 2022 by Florian Nowak

Product news: The manufacturer of components Tektro is known for its high-quality and specific solutions. Tailor-made solutions are also always available for e-bikes. After launching TRP E-Bike Solutions products, such as a 2,3mm thick rotor, the manufacturer is now introducing the Tektro ED 9 system. This is a special 9-speed circuit for e-bikes, MTB and ATB.

The impetus came back in 2017 with the first customer requests for more robust braking systems for e-bikes. The solution was a 2,3 mm brake disc standard on the TRP DHR Evo brake systems. In 2019, the new TRP circuit segment with the two rear derailleurs DH7 and TR12 was launched. For the Tektro ED 9 system, too, the impetus came from customers who were looking for more robust and low-wear gearshift solutions, especially for entry-level e-bikes.

During the development of the new Tektro ED 9 system, special attention was paid to the implementation of customer requirements in terms of wear and tear and greater circuit bandwidth, reports the manufacturer. Because especially with entry-level e-bikes, whether MTB or ATB, the "turbo mode" is used more and more often and thus also shifted, whereby the smallest 3 sprockets are mainly used, as analyzes by the manufacturer show. In order to counteract this problem, not only the drive was reinforced accordingly, but the smallest 3 sprockets on the cassette can be exchanged separately. This means that the entire cassette does not have to be changed when the smallest sprockets are worn out.

"E-bikes that are used every day are used at least as hard as the bikes of World Cup racers." - Louis Tsai, TRP development engineer

Another special feature is the rear derailleur, which has a clutch for stronger chain tension. The switching system was implemented in close cooperation and coordination with Conway and his development team. The first models with the new Tektro ED 9 gears and cassette will be available in February 2022. The Tektro system consists of the 9-speed E-Drive rear derailleur, the associated shifter and the matching cassette with 11-46 teeth. It is only offered as original equipment for wheel manufacturers

Tektro ED 9 System Features:

  • Cassette 11 – 46
  • Lower service costs: 11-13-16 sprockets can be replaced separately
  • More fun uphill: Significantly lighter gears with a 46 sprocket
  • 9-speed rear derailleur with clutch for optimized chain tension

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
