GT eGrade AMP review: E-UpGRADE for the Triple Triangle

31 May 2021 by Florian Nowak

Test: The GT eGrade AMP starts with a balanced setup and a lot of composure and brings a lot of fun thanks to natural driving characteristics, high-quality equipment and dynamic drive system. We tested the e-gravel bike for you.

Most people are probably familiar with GT as a manufacturer of mountain bikes, because even though GT was a sponsor of the Belgian lottery team a good 20 years ago, the bikes were only able to assert themselves to a limited extent in road racing. But you could score a lot more with your high-quality bikes on rougher ground and set accents again and again. With the new GT eGrade AMP, they now dare to enter the e-gravel bike scene.

GT eGrade - Comfortable and Relaxed

GT eGrade

The eGrade was designed on the basis of the "classic" GT Grade gravel bike and of course also has the GT trademark in its luggage. We are talking about the typical “triple triangle”. At first glance, this is the rather unconventional transition of the seat stays into the main frame, but it offers good flex and thus good comfort, especially in the seating area. At the front, on the other hand, a high-quality carbon fork provides the necessary damping, while the main frame is made of aluminum. In combination with the balanced geometry, you are pretty relaxed on the road here and have no problems with bumpy gravel roads and dirt roads.

GT eGrade - Almost like a normal gravel bike

GT eGrade

As the name suggests, the GT eGrade relies on additional support so that you can be more relaxed on the climbs. Only on closer inspection does it become clear where the extra power is supposed to come from. Because the frame hardly provides any information except for a button on the top tube. Things become much clearer when you take a closer look at the rear wheel hub. This is where the heart of the Mahle ebikemotion X35+ hub drive is located. This provides dynamic, sporty e-support without adding too much weight. With 250 watts of maximum support and 250 Wh of battery power, you get the boost you need when you need it, without impairing the natural riding experience or offering an unnecessarily loud background noise. Even if the drive is decoupled at over 25 km/h, you can continue driving and having fun with this setup.

GT eGrade - More versatility for more driving pleasure

The all-round suitable WTB Resolute tires with a good profile and 42mm width ensure proper grip and decent comfort, while you can rely on even more versatility with various mounting options for bags, mudguards, luggage racks or even three bottle holders. This should please long-distance riders and bikepacking fans in particular. A successful mix of mechanical Shimano GRX 800 and 600 with a chainring completes the appealing overall package.
