Cube Edge X Trail Actionteam backpack tested: Striking design with SAS-Tec protector

22 December 2020 by the editorial office

Cube Edge X Trail

Test / Accessories: A compact trail backpack for day tours on demanding trails and well protected thanks to the integrated SAS-TEC back protector. The Cube Edge X Trail in the Actionteam design is visually striking, but otherwise presents itself as a reserved, reliable companion on the bike.

When you hold the Franconian backpack in your hand for the first time, you immediately notice the very dominant orange. The Edge X Trail is kept in the Actionteam colors and is therefore an absolute eye-catcher. In addition to the team version, the backpack is also available in three other color combinations: red, blue and black.

Quick Facts Cube Edge X Trail Action Team:

In a contrasting colour, you will find the helmet carrying system on the front of the Edge, which also has an integrated compartment for smartphones or maps. An emergency plan is printed on the inside with hand signals, emergency numbers and first aid tips. Thanks to the easily adjustable straps, the system offers enough space for half shells or full-face helmets.

Between the helmet carrying system and the main bag is the tool compartment, in which tools and spare parts can be easily stowed away thanks to smaller mesh compartments. To be able to open the compartment completely, you only have to remove the hooks of the helmet system and you have full access.

Sufficient storage space and SAS-Tec protector

The main compartment offers enough storage space for a day tour on which rainwear, snacks and accessories should not be missing. The small compartment in the back wall offers space for large smartphones and has a hook to attach keys and the like. We were able to take our rain jacket, camera equipment and drinks with us on our tours and are convinced of the storage space of the 16l backpack. On the side of the bag there is a padded compartment in which valuables can be stowed.

There is another zip behind the main compartment, which opens the compartment for the back protector and the retrofittable hydration bladder. The protector from the German company SAS-TEC offers sufficient protection on rough terrain and can be easily removed if necessary.

Natural fit with weak points

The shoulder straps of the Edge X Trail are well padded and distribute the weight of the backpack comfortably. Cube uses the in-house "Naturalfit" design and offers a very comfortable fit with the ergonomically successful back part.

The weak point of the trail backpack is clearly the somewhat uncomfortable hip belt. Unfortunately, this is hardly padded and is more annoying than comfortable to wear. As soon as you put tools or harder objects in the pockets sewn on the side of the belt, after a while they press uncomfortably on your hips. The length of the strap is also not as variable as with comparable backpacks and may be a bit too small for mountain bikers with a larger waist circumference.

The Cube Edge X Trail in the Actionteam variant is a very practical trail companion and, with its 16l, offers sufficient storage space for day trips. The integrated SAS-Tec protector provides proper protection and the tool compartment offers a well-organized design with its small compartments. The only flaw is the uncomfortable hip belt, which unfortunately drowns out the Bavarians' natural fit design in a negative way.
