Husqvarna GU5: Noble and comfortable urban tourer

31 October 2019 by Michael Faiss

Product news / E-Performance: With the Husqvarna GU5, we had a modern e-bike in the editorial office, which, with its comfortable geometry and MTB genes such as wide tires, suspension fork and retractable seat post, fits perfectly into the currently very popular SUV e-bike category fits.

Since the end of 2017, the name Husqvarna has also stood for high-quality e-bikes. In little more than two years, however, the manufacturer was also able to make a very positive name for itself in the bicycle sector. The E-MTBs in particular caused quite a stir, not least thanks to brand ambassador and MTB veteran Guido Tschugg. But the manufacturer with Swedish roots is also strongly represented in the city, trekking and urban areas and offers some extremely exciting bikes. For the 2020 season, further models will be added with the GU (=Gran Urban) bikes. The Husqvarna GU bikes, which are only available as step-through bikes, bridge the gap between urban, trekking and mountain biking.

In concrete terms, this means: The compact 27,5″ wheels are fitted with thick tires whose large volume significantly improves riding comfort and grip. Of course, a suspension fork should also not be missing: trips on gravel and dirt roads are no problem. On the other side of the range of equipment are the robust metal mudguards, luggage rack, side stand and a lighting system that conforms to the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations. Despite its sporty off-road roots, the bike is also well equipped for everyday use. All three available GU models are powered by the new Shimano Steps E6100 motor. This offers more than enough power for more demanding tours and excellent ergonomics - i.e. display and control unit.

The Husqvarna GU5: First impressions

We've already had a detailed look at the mid-level trim level of the new Husqvarna GU. The GU5 will go on sale for the 2020 season for a price of 3.899 euros and will bring consistently high-quality equipment without any significant compromises.

The look of the sporty step-through bike is convincing: not too boring, not too flashy. The color accents show attention to detail.

The skeleton interface is already known from other models, which also visually puts the drive unit in the spotlight. Nice: the motor protection on the underside.
Where other manufacturers strive to hide the engine, the Husqvarna proudly displays it.
The charging connection for the integrated 500Wh connection is easily accessible on the down tube.

The gear changes on the Husqvarna GU5 are handled by the new Shimano SLX 12-speed gears with an extremely wide 10-51 cassette. This means that you are well prepared for really steep climbs and should always be able to find the right gear. The Suntour Mobi25 Air is used as the suspension fork, which provides 75mm of travel and can be adjusted to the rider's weight using air pressure. Speaking of rider weight: The Husqvarna GU5 is approved up to a total weight (rider + bike) of 130kg.

The new Shimano SLX 12-speed circuit offers excellent performance and a huge range.
Thumbs up: Husqvarna has installed a retractable seat post on the GU5, which makes stopping at traffic lights a lot easier, for example.
Pressing the lever on the handlebar lowers the saddle. Pressing it again allows it to extend back to its original height.

The cockpit is well done, the display is nice and big and easy to read.
The Super Moto tires from Schwalbe with a width of 2,4″ are extremely comfortable and have a good grip.
Wide mudguards protect against spray water in the rain and on wet roads.
