Eurobike 2019: Nicolai G1 EBOXX E14 Explorer Edition - E-Enduro for adventurers

September 9, 2019 by Michael Faiss

E-MTB / E-Performance: E-mountain bikes suitable for everyday use and touring are on everyone's lips and are certainly among the highlights of this year's Eurobike. In this respect, it was not a big surprise that we also discovered such an e-bike at the stand of the traditional German manufacturer von Nicolai. But Nicolai wouldn't be Nicolai if you relied on standard parts and 0815 solutions. Instead, there is the noble e-bike Nicolai G1 EBOXX E14 with Rohloff, belt drive, top components and tailor-made Explorer equipment for everyday life and adventure alike.

The still extremely potent, all-terrain G1 EBOXX becomes an adventurer suitable for everyday use thanks to the Explorer Kit.

With Rohloff and full equipment to the adventurer

No question, the Nicolai G1 EBOXX E14 is a grandiose, noble and expensive e-mountain bike. Our test of the "normal" variant without a Rohloff shifter also showed this. Maybe it was this Rohloff circuit that inspired the creators behind the EBOXX to give their potent E-Fully an Explorer kit that, in addition to mudguards, lighting and a luggage rack, even has a side stand on board. After all, there is hardly a circuit that would suit an “explorer” better, i.e. an adventurer, than the noble “coke can”, as it is called by its own fans. Wide range, low wear and tear and almost maintenance-free operation: you could hardly imagine a better combination on a long-distance bike.

High level of engineering skill: Accommodating a drive belt on a full-suspension e-bike requires a sophisticated design.
Rohloff with belt drive: You can hardly get a bike that is more robust and requires less maintenance.

Explorer Kit: Sophisticated, high-quality equipment package

In its normal version, however, the G1 EBOXX E14 is only a bike suitable for adventures to a limited extent and should probably prove to be a suitable companion almost exclusively for trail adventures. This could now change for the 2020 model year - with the new Explorer kit, which will be available as an option for the E-Enduro. This equipment package includes the following attachments:

  • Mudguards
  • Rack
  • Lighting
  • kickstand
  • panniers
  • Abus folding lock

The Explorer Kit costs an additional 950 euros, which then drives the price for the complete bike with Rohloff to a proud 10.149 euros. It's an expensive undertaking, but buyers get a lot in return. Take the mudguards, for example: this is always a difficult task on mountain bikes - although there are now numerous models for suspension forks, these are often either too short or are so high that they hit the tire when the fork is fully compressed. The solution at Nicolai: Take extra-wide mudguards from SKS, which are sawn up by hand and then reattached with a bracket that we developed ourselves. A separate bracket was also milled for the rear triangle, which also accommodates an Abus folding lock.

The mudguard on the front is separated and reattached to the fork together with the self-constructed bracket.

At the rear, the luggage rack is not only prepared for attaching panniers, but these are even included in the scope of delivery - of course from the German quality manufacturer Ortlieb. The equipment is similarly classy, with front and rear lights from Supernova providing illumination. The side stand was also thought through: This comes from Pletscher and is not attached to the rear triangle, but sits approximately at the height of the bottom bracket. This means that the massive e-bike stands securely without wobbling, even when fully loaded.

At the rear, the luggage rack is screwed to a milled bracket.
The entire construction offers space for an Abus folding lock.
The lighting comes from Supernova.
The compact rear light is surprisingly bright.

The Explorer Kit will be available from Nicolai in the next few weeks.
