Product news / Eurobike 2019: With the eSTOP brake system, the Bad Urach-based manufacturer Magura is addressing the special requirements of e-bikes. Magura counters the increase in mass and the higher speeds with specially coordinated components, which are intended to guarantee the e-rider more braking power and optimized braking performance even under heavy continuous loads.
The fact that e-biking places increased demands on the material is certainly no longer a secret. In addition to the weight of the e-bike, the higher speeds also put additional strain on the installed parts. A lot is demanded of the brakes in particular when e-biking. The manufacturer Magura from Bad Urach has faced the problem and developed the new braking system eSTOP. The system designed for e-bikes consists of three components that are specially matched to each other. In addition to the eSTOP brake models, the optimized brake discs and the new SPORT brake pads should guarantee the driver maximum braking performance.
Two eSTOP brake models for city, trekking and E-MTB
Magura offers two eSTOP brake models. Both the MT5 eSTOP and the MT4 eSTOP are based on the properties of the proven MT series. The MT5 eSTOP comes as a 4-piston brake and is specifically aimed at e-mountain bikers. The MT4 eSTOP model for E-City / E-Trekking, on the other hand, has a 2-piston brake caliper. The prices are 114,90 euros (MT5 eSTOP) and 94,90 euros (MT4 eSTOP). Anyone who has already installed a Magura MT model on their bike can use the Magura eSTOP Optimized Kits to optimize their brakes for use on e-bikes. The kits include SPORT pads and MDR-P/MDR-C brake discs.
Organic SPORT pads with shorter braking times
The pad mixture of the organic SPORT pads has been specially adapted to the high demands of e-biking and use with the eSTOP brake models. According to the manufacturer Magura, the new pads are positioned between the in-house COMFORT and PERFORMANCE pads in terms of braking performance and durability. The new SPORT pads should also be ready for use particularly quickly thanks to a shorter braking time. Magura offers two versions at a price of 17,90 and 19,90 euros.
MDR-P brake disc also available with 220 mm diameter
Magura promises increased performance and stability with reduced vibration generation with the new MDR-C/MDR-P brake discs. The MDR-C brake disc is the all-rounder for city or trail, for particularly high demands and tough applications the MDR-P can be found in the portfolio. As a special feature, the two-piece disc of the MDR-P offers a patented toothing of the outer and inner ring. The gearing enables additional support on the inner ring in the event of thermal expansion of the outer ring. The advantage here is that the torque is transmitted over the entire surface instead of just over the rivets. According to Magura, the result is reflected in increased rigidity of the brake disc and particularly direct heat dissipation under continuous load.
More braking power and less brake fade
The MDR-P brake disc is available with a diameter of 203 mm or 220 mm. According to the manufacturer, the 220 mm disc generates around 10% more braking power than a model with a diameter of 203 mm with the same manual force - compared to a 180 mm disc, it is even 20% more braking power. Due to the higher mass of the large disc, the risk of brake fading is also said to be smaller. According to the data sheet, the MDR-P weighs 216 grams (203 mm) or 241 grams (220 mm), the price is 55,00 euros each. The brake disc model MDR-C is available as a 180 mm (162 grams) or 203 mm (222 grams) version at a price of EUR 30,00 each.
