E-Performance: Three years ago, the bike manufacturer Merida added a powerful e-model to its popular ONE-SIXTY enduro series. Equipped with a modern geometry, 160 millimeters of suspension travel and Shimano Steps E8000 drive, the e-mountain bike is primarily aimed at downhill-oriented bikers who were not averse to a built-in shuttle service. After three years of success, the brand is now presenting the completely revised new Merida eONE-SIXTY.
Three years is a long time in the e-bike sector. A lot has happened, further developed technologies and new standards characterize the new E-MTB generation. This also includes the fully integrated battery, which most brands - at least in the high-end models - no longer do without. So of course it was time for Merida to update the eONE-SIXTY. Today is the day: Merida presents the new eONE-SIXTY to the public.
Carbon frame with air outlet channels for the battery
Merida uses carbon for the frame of the e-enduro. The reasons for this are high rigidity values and stability with low weight. One problem during development, however, was the large battery opening in the frame. In order to ensure frame rigidity here too, Merida relies on a specific layer structure when constructing the carbon frame. Merida has also developed the Thermo Gate for optimal battery cooling. Due to the chimney effect, the warm air is discharged to the outside via the openings near the head tube.
The designers were also creative when developing the Energy Guard, a two-component battery protection. This should protect the battery on the one hand and ensure safe access to the battery on the other. According to the manufacturer, the battery seat is completely rattle-free. Shimano's double locking mechanism should also prevent the battery from being released accidentally. For the electric drive, Merida relies on the proven Shimano Steps E8000 system in combination with the very compact 504 Wh Shimano 8035 battery.
Two different wheel sizes for more performance
When choosing the wheel size, Merida uses a mix of 29" and 27,5". The front 29"x2.5" wheel should ensure improved handling and confident cornering, the rear 27,5"x2,6" maximum traction with playful handling. The slacker steering angle of the new Merida eONE-SIXTY with the lowered bottom bracket promises improved control at high speeds. The new model is designed for crank arms with a length of 165 mm. All trains run inside the frame, which ensures a tidy look. An integrated steering stop protects the down tube in the event of a fall.
The Merida eONE-SIXTY is available in five sizes and four different configurations. Even the smallest frame size (XS) should offer space for a 0,75 liter drinking bottle. All four trim levels have the same frame with 160 mm travel, the same motor and the same battery. Depending on the equipment, the price is between 5.000 and 10.000 euros. The top model comes with Shimano XTR and Fox Factory components. The new Merida eONE-SIXTY will be available from October 2019.
