Cycling: Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Merida) took over the Deutschland Tour in Merzig today – in almost all ratings. The Slovenian not only won the stage, but also took over the red jersey, the green jersey and the white jersey at the same time. Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin) was second in the stage and is third in the overall standings. In between is the previous leader Maximilian Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors).
Three Germans in the group – Carpenter conquers the mountain jersey
From Trier to Merzig, the field of riders on the Deutschland Tour covered a distance of 177 kilometers today. There were five mountain classifications to be completed, which should again prevent a classic sprint finish. Due to the time gaps in the overall standings, there were numerous attacks right at kilometer zero. The hope that a breakaway group could reach the finish ahead of the peloton was unbroken. At the escape of the day were with Yuri Hollman (Heizomat rad-net.de), John Hodapp (Sauerland NRW p/b SKS Germany) and Rick Zabel (Katusha-Alpecin) three Germans involved. The group was completed by the Dutchman Oscar Riesebeek (Roompot-Nederlandse-Loterij), the Russian Evgeny Shalunov (Gazprom-RusVelo), the Australian Adam hansen (Lotto Soudal) and the American Robin Carpenter (Rally Cycling). Even if the escape shouldn't be successful today either, at least the last-mentioned professional was happy. Robin Carpenter conquered the mountain jersey.
Matej Mohoric takes over almost all jerseys
Two more laps had to be completed in the destination of Merzig – one long and one short. As expected, there were numerous attacks, so that the breakaways were gradually collected. A really dangerous attack put just before the goal Warren Barguil (Fortuneo-Samsic) and Pieter Weening (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), who also secured the bonus seconds. But it wasn't enough to win the stage, because in the main field you didn't want to give victory away so easily. It was again Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin), who started the sprint with a strong start. However, the Slovenian pulled from his rear wheel Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Merida) still over. With a golden helmet on his head, the Slovenian celebrated the stage victory - and the lead in the overall standings, the points standings and the youngsters' standings. The previous overall leader Maximilian schachmann (Quick-Step Floors) was held up slightly by a fall in the final sprint and was no longer able to influence the decision. finished second Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin). Pieter Vanspeybrouck (Wanty Groupe Gobert).
