Cycling: Actually, on Saturday at Strade Bianche, the professional cyclists are supposed to race over the white gravel roads. But currently the area in Tuscany looks more like a cross-country ski trail. There is quite a bit of snow on and beside the roads. But the all-clear has been given: It will be warmer by Saturday and the snow should give way to rain.
Drivers post photos of snow-covered roads
Although Strade Bianche only gets down to business on Saturday, most of the pros are already in Tuscany. Here they train for a few days on the gravel tracks before things get serious at the weekend. But there is currently less gravel to be seen, because the streets of Strade Bianche are partially covered with snow. Many drivers published photos of their training or the view from the hotel room on their social networks. Christoph Pfingsten, for example, will start alongside Peter Sagan for Bora-hansgrohe on Saturday. He tweets "I actually thought that I was in Italy and not on a skiing holiday". In his picture you can see a huge pool, but you certainly don't want to jump in at these temperatures.
Strade Bianche's official Twitter account also published a picture saying that the one-day race will probably be really white this time. Fortunately, the weather forecast gives the all-clear. It remains to be seen whether a race would even take place given the current conditions. But the temperature is expected to rise by more than 10 degrees in the coming days. It's also supposed to rain on the day of the race, so the snow won't play a role anyway. But the race will certainly not be any less exciting. The white dust then turns into brown mud. So it seems Strade Bianche isn't going to be whiter than ever this year after all...
