Cycling: Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) won the Gent-Wevelgem one-day race. The world champion proved to be the strongest among many strong sprinters in the small group. Second was the Italian Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) ahead of the French Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ).
Only top sprinters in the first group
This Sunday afternoon, the prestigious one-day race Gent-Wevelgem was on the program. The professionals had to cover 251,1 kilometers from Deinze to Wevelgem. At acceptable temperatures, there were no fewer than 11 slipways and a few passages on cobblestones to master. As expected, the breakaway of the day didn't have a realistic chance of getting through. The interests in the field of drivers were simply too great. Around 35 kilometers before the finish, the Baneberg and the Kemmelberg were the last slipways to be conquered. The peloton fell apart. Numerous top sprinters were represented in the first group, including last year's winner Greg Vam Avermaet (BMC) and the triumphant of 2016, Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe). But Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) and Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) were also there, which should make it impossible to choose a favorite.
Sagan wins & Viviani cries
Behind the leading group of around 15-20 men, numerous teams were fighting to catch up that missed the postal departure, including Astana, who tried to keep up the pace with three professionals. But they shouldn't come forward. Despite some attacks, the leading group arrived as one and the sprint started. But hardly anyone seemed to have any strength left, because apart from Peter Sagan, nobody could bring their top speed onto the road. The world champion drove away from everyone on the left side of the road and didn't let anyone sprint past from his slipstream. Behind him, Elia Viviani was annoyed about his second place. After the race he sat crying on the street like a heap of misery. The emotional state of Peter Sagan is completely different: the Slovak finally has his third win of the season in his pocket.
