A sextet sees good chances
Today the Volta ao Algarve was a little quieter. After his Time Trial Victory ging Geraint Thomas (Sky) relatively calm in the fourth part of the tour. On the 199,2 kilometers between the start in Almodôvar and the finish in Tavira, only two mountains of the fourth category had to be crossed. The mountain classifications in Neves and Santa Marta played no role in the outcome of the stage because they were taken very early on. So the chance for a victory for the escapees was actually not that small today. A sextet tried to escape: Benjamin King (dimension data), Rory Sutherland (UAE Team Emirates), Julen Amezqueta (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Bruno silva (Efapel), Aleksandr Grigorev (Sporting-Tavira) and João Rodrigues (W52-FC Porto).
Groenewegen with his third win of the season
A few kilometers before the finish, the peloton was able to reduce the gap significantly. Then suddenly the Belgians jumped Philip Gilbert (Quick-Step Floors) and Dylan teuns (BMC), as well as the German Jasha Sutterlin (Movistar) to the breakaways forward. But even this support should not help. It came to the expected mass sprint in Tavira. As already on the first stage cheered Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo). The Dutchman left Matteo Pelucchi (Bora-hansgrohe) and John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) behind. Tomorrow the decision will be made at the Volta ao Algarve, even if it's up for Team Sky in the overall standings Geraint Thomas and Michal Kwiatkowski already looks very good. The drivers cover 173,5 kilometers from Faro to Loulé. The finish line has to be crossed at Alto do Malhão. Although this is only 2,5 kilometers long, it is a whopping 9,9 percent steep.
