Valencia Tour #1: Groenewegen celebrates ahead of Jakobsen & Kristoff

February 5rd 2020 by Michael Behringer

Groenewegen Tour of Valencia

Cycling: Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo – Visma) made the perfect start to the season. At the Tour of Valencia, the Dutchman won the opening stage ahead of Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) and Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates). John Degenkolb (Lotto – Soudal) was seventh.

Groenewegen sprints to success with a lot of slipstream

Actually, he was far too badly placed. But a super sprinter like Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo – Visma) can take a stage win even from such a bad position. On the first stage of the Tour of Valencia, you couldn't even see the Dutchman at the start of the sprint. But then he passed everyone on the right. After 180,0 kilometers from Castelló to Vila-Real Fabio Jacobsen (Deceuninck – Quick Step) and alexander kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) lost.

5 stages decide the overall victory

The 71st Tour of Valencia consists of five stages and will end in Valencia on Sunday. In the battle for overall victory, the fourth stage is particularly important. But the tour is generally known to be very bumpy and therefore something for puncheurs and climbers. Last year's winner Ion Izaguirre (Astana) starts with number 1 and will try to defend his title.
