Cycling: There was a serious traffic accident on Friday. Again, drivers of a professional team were involved. Memories came up of the Accident involving several riders from the Giant-Alpecin team. This time two professionals from Quick-Step Floors got it. Bob Jungels was traveling in South Africa with his teammates Petr Vakoc and Laurens De Plus when a truck crashed into the group. Luckily no one was critically injured, but Bob Jungels was the only one not hit. The Luxembourger has now addressed all road users with an emotional video.
Jungels appeals for more caution
The Luxembourger Bob Jungels, the Czech Peter Vakoc and the Belgian Laurens DePlus will probably never be able to forget last Friday. The two last-named professionals fell due to a truck driving too close and sustained serious injuries in some cases. Bob Jungels escaped unscathed and had to administer first aid along with a woman on the side of the road. Now he has addressed all road users via video message.
"It's sad that it always has to come to a situation like this before we wake up. We are the most vulnerable road users because we have nothing to protect us. Everyone should consider whether putting us in such danger is worth the extra minute or two.”
De Plus & Vakoc is doing better
After the accident, the two injured professionals Petr Vakoc and Laurens De Plus were immediately taken to a hospital. The Czechs got it worse. He underwent surgery on several broken vertebrae and now has to stay in South Africa for another ten days before he can travel back to Europe. However, Team Quick-Step Floors has let us know that both riders are doing well given the circumstances and are on the mend. Permanent damage could not be identified. However, one would not wish such a situation on anyone. In his video, Bob Jungels therefore sends a clear message to all road users.
“I'm not saying that we cyclists do everything right. Often we use too much of the street, we don't always respect the rules either. The message I want to give here is that I really hope no one ever has to go through what I went through with my two teammates two days ago.”
Time to look ahead again💪🏻
