In Memory of Gino Maeder
The fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse was to be the last race in Gino Mäder's life. At the young age of just 26, the Swiss professional cyclist died far too early. When he went down the Albula Pass at over 90 km/h yesterday, he fell with Magnus Sheffield. They fall down a slope. Gino Mäder landed on a stone floor and had to be resuscitated immediately. He was then taken to the hospital. He passed away this Friday. The organizers of the Tour de Suisse, together with the teams and riders, then decided to neutralize today's sixth stage. The drivers covered 30 kilometers to the destination of Oberwil-Lieli in honor of the late Gino Mäder.
Loyal noble helper with own victories and great character
Gino Mäder leaves behind a family, friends and numerous work colleagues who have always described him as cheerful, friendly and loyal. In his young and far too short career, the Swiss celebrated seven victories. He achieved his greatest successes in 2021 when he won both a stage in the Giro d'Italia and a section of the Tour de Suisse. In the same season he finished the Vuelta a Espana in fifth place overall. In 2022 he finished second overall in the Tour de Romandie, this year he finished fifth in Paris – Nice. However, Gino Mäder will not be missing from cycling because of his great successes, but because of his authentic and always cheerful character.
This is how we will always remember you❤️ With a big smile on your face! The peloton will ride the last 20 kilometers of today's course neutralized in honor of Gino Mäder. Expected finish in Oberwil-Lieli is 16.40 p.m.

Such heart-breaking scenes at the Tour de Suisse today. I hope that everyone gets the time they need to process this.
The cycling community is relatively small and this news will no doubt touch everyone. It's just so terribly sad.
