Product news: The RAAW Mountain Bikes brand, founded last year, is serious! In spring 2018 the first frame kits of the first bike called RAAW Madonna should be available. In fact, the 29" Enduro has some very well thought-out detailed solutions that are worth a closer look. The part definitely makes a fat impression!
Who or what is RAAW Mountain Bikes?
There is one name behind RAAW Mountain Bikes: Ruben Torenbeek. Born in the Netherlands, he worked as a product designer and developer in the bike industry for seven years – including at Scott and Ghost Bikes. In 2016, the bike fanatic, who now lives in Rettenberg, founded the RAAW Mountain Bikes brand. The aim of the young company is to develop mountain bikes based on innovative technical solutions. Inspired by the many ways in which bikes can be improved, the innovative brand eludes the prevailing "the next big thing" thought of the big bike manufacturers.
RAAW Mountain Bikes implements the 3D CAD models with the parametric PTC Creo software. The group of users of the industry-leading 3D CAD software also includes companies such as KTM and Aston Martin. The result is complex, extremely precise surface representations. When building the aluminum frame, the creative bike forge uses modern hydroforming as well as modern forging and milling technology. The credo is plain and simple: "Show what is possible with aluminium".
RAAW Madonna: The key data at a glance
The rough key data of the RAAW Madonna can be summarized quickly: frame made of AL 6066 T6 with four-link rear construction, 160 mm spring travel at the front and at the rear as well as 29" wheels. Of course, the enduro, which is available in three sizes (M, L and XL), comes with the Boost standard and DPX2 or DHX2 shock absorber. The generously dimensioned rear end and the bolted BSA bottom bracket enable a tire width of up to 2,6" - thanks to the generous tire clearance, there should also be enough space for flexing rear wheels.
The steering angle of 65° can be regarded as quite sporty. In combination with the rather long reach (size L: 475 mm), the stack (size L: 639 mm) and the chainstay length (size L: 445 mm), the rider is offered a fast enduro that is also predictable and easy to control should inspire driving behavior. According to the manufacturer, the finely balanced geometry guarantees an optimal degree of smooth running. The shock absorber is controlled via a large rocker that provides 20% progression at the end of the spring travel. The high pivot point of the rear triangle has been optimized for a single drive, which in turn promises a drive-neutral suspension.
RAAW Madonna: Well thought-out concept with fine detail solutions
Ten 28 mm and two 52 mm completely sealed bearings are used on the rear triangle. Damage caused by water, dust and mud is thus nipped in the bud. Bushes are not installed on the damper eyes, as is usual, but large-area industrial bearings. The result should indeed be characterized by a more sensitive rear triangle. The well thought-out concept is also reflected in the area of maintenance: no more than a 5 mm Allen key is required for working on the frame hardware. To ensure easy access, the shifter cable and rear brake line on the RAAW Madonna Enduro run on the outside of the frame.
The weight of the frame including hardware is specified at 3,6 kilograms in size M. According to the manufacturer, the weight optimization takes place in the form of hollow forged components - the frame, however, comes with a closed surface. Dirt and dirt is thus offered less surface to attack. The deep recess on the down tube, which offers space for a spare tube, is certainly clever. Also very clever: the top tube made of two individual tubes creates space for a luggage bag. Trail equipment such as inner tubes, mini tools or the like can be transported without rattling - and you can take them with you on every tour.
