Cycling: The Trek-Segafredo team has against the rating of 16st stage lodged a protest in the Tour de France. It is criticized that the day's winner Michael Matthews (Sunweb) is said to have pushed the German professional John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) aside.
Has Michael Matthews left the driving line?
John Degenkolb complained as soon as he crossed the finish line. The German raised his right arm and pointed reproachfully at the jubilant Michael Matthews. What happened? Matthews passed Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) in front of him on the right. Driving even further to the right is John Degenkolb, who in turn is trying to pass Michael Matthews. This makes such a wide berth around Van Avermaet that he and Degenkolb drift further and further to the right.
Michael Matthews feels the sprint is fair
The Trek-Segafredo team lodged a protest against the classification immediately after crossing the finish line. John Degenkolb commented after the race: “Michael Matthews has definitely left his driving line and is from the left to the right. He deliberately closed the gap there for me because he saw me too. I came with more speed and had to take it out, so it wasn't enough to win.” Michael Matthews on the other hand, feels his sprint is fair: “That was a correct sprint. I didn't hinder anyone."
