Cycling: Larry Warbasse (Aqua Blue Sport) has won Stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse. The American was the only escape in front of the favorites to climb the summit in Villars-sur-Ollon. Second was Damiano Caruso (BMC), who also takes the lead in the overall standings.
143 kilometers - 4 outliers - 2 mountains
The mountains are calling - or rather THE mountains are calling. Because the route of the Tour de Suisse 2017 turned into the mountains for the first time today. On the 143-kilometer route from Bern to Villars-sur-Ollon, two climbs were on the agenda. After 116 kilometers, the first thing to overcome was the summit of the Col de Mosses. After a descent, the final ascent to Villars-sur-Ollon followed. After on the second stage Rohan Dennis (BMC) had to give up the leader's jersey due to a fall, Stefan Küng (BMC) suffered on the third stage same fate. Today the yellow jersey sat on the shoulders of Michael Matthews (Sunweb) who, as expected, was going to have a hard time in this mountainous terrain. Four drivers managed to escape early in warm temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius: Lars Boom (LottoNL-Jumbo), Larry Warbasse (Aqua Blue Sport), Antoine Duschsne (Direct Energie) and Nick van der Lijke (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij). ) tried their luck and were able to extend the lead to over seven minutes. While Lars Boom couldn't keep up with him on the first climb, Nick van der Lijke secured full points. He was only one point behind leader Lasse Norman Hansen (Aqua Blue Sport).
Michael Matthews puts his feet up - new man in yellow
At the start of the race, the pace was set by Team Sunweb. However, the men from Bahrain-Merida in particular were at the forefront of the field on the climbs and descents. No wonder, because after all you want to make the big hit this year with last year's overall second Jon Izagirre. Virtually on the descent between the two climbs was Lars Boom in the yellow jersey. But he probably had no realistic prospects, since he was traveling completely alone. Jonathan Restrepo (Katusha-Alpecin) tried the same thing, but his attack from the field was promptly thwarted. Sebastien Reichenbach (FDJ), Matthias Brändle (Trek-Segafredo), Lawson Craddock (Cannondale-Drapac) and Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg (Dimension Data) were no longer in the race. They gave up during the fourth stage or didn't even start. The three remaining escapees didn't want to give up. They went into the final climb with a lead of a little over four minutes. There, Michael Matthews immediately put his feet up. So he didn't even want to try today.
Larry Warbasse perseveres – Damiano Caruso takes yellow
Larry Warbasse didn't hesitate and left his companions early on in the final climb. Alone he now fought against the approaching field. Of course, this peloton got smaller minute by minute - as did the gap to Warbasse. The rest of the former runaways were caught. Numerous attacks from the group of favorites were ridden. First Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r) was able to break free, later Matthias Frank (Ag2r), but the group of favorites kept coming together. However, Larry Warbasse could no longer be asked. The American saved himself in front of Damiano Caruso (BMC) and Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo). This is his first professional win. In terms of overall standings, the numerous candidates didn't really take much today. However, Damiano Caruso can be happy today. He will start tomorrow in yellow.
