cycling: Tour de Suisse stage #9: Historic triple success for BMC

June 18, 2017 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: Team BMC has once again proven its strength in time trials. In the final time trial around Schaffhausen, Rohan Dennis (BMC) won ahead of his two teammates Stefan Küng and Damiano Caruso. In the overall standings, however, Simon Spilak (Katusha-Alpecin) could no longer be dislodged from the top.

BMC, BMC & BMC - but Spilak was not dethroned

The 81st Tour de Suisse was to be decided today. In a 28-kilometre battle against the clock around Schaffhausen, it was all about the last day's win and, of course, about the ranks in the overall standings. The predominantly flat course puts a small wave in the way of the riders just before the finish. However, this hilly finish should not faze the time trial specialists. With a time of 36:30, Rohan Dennis (BMC) set the first serious target time. For a moment there was even a triple lead for Team BMC to admire. His teammates Stefan Küng and Tejay Van Garderen sorted themselves in behind Dennis. When Marc Soler (Movistar) temporarily moved up to third place, the dream of a hat-trick seemed to be over. But then came Damiano Caruso. The Italian edged out the third-placed teammate and ensured a historic triple triumph for his team. Rohan Dennis was happy about his day's win and Damiano Caruso about second place in the overall standings. However, Simon Spilak did not let the overall victory be taken away from him. With his fifth place he lost only four seconds to Caruso. Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) snagged third overall.
