Cycling: The Spaniard Gorka Izagirre (Movistar) has won the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia. Ion Izaguirre's older brother finished just ahead of Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain-Merida) and Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana). The favorites didn't show any weakness and rolled over the line in a group.
A great victory for Gorka Izagirre in today's stage of the Giro! Hardly anyone had the 29-year-old Movistar pro as a favorite today, after all the veteran is one of the most important helpers for Nairo Quintana. But as so often in the past, it was a breakaway group that decisively shaped the course of the stage and the result. The escape group of the day comprised a total of 16 men, in which, in addition to the later podium trio Izagirre, Visconti and Sanchez, the Austrian day winner of the last week, Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) drove.
As time went on, it became clear that the breakaways had a real chance of winning today – unsurprisingly, they drove there with knives between their teeth and various attacks forced the pace again and again. However, while most of the attacks fizzled out, the group continued to shrink and finally Valerio Conti (UAE) had the decisive start, who started with almost 10km to go and finally tore the group apart decisively. Only Izagirre, Visconti and Sanchez were able to follow the 24-year-old Italian and the new quartet watched each other until the decisive climb in the final 1000 meters. Conti was actually in the best form and was well placed when an unfortunate crash thwarted his podium goal; the UAE professional slipped his front wheel in a curve and fell onto the asphalt. Sanchez and Visconti had to brake briefly, which in turn gave Izagirre the chance, which he immediately took advantage of. Despite their best efforts, Visconti and Sanchez were no longer able to close the gap that opened up here.
Bob Jungels was able to successfully defend the overall lead and the other favorites didn't lose their feathers either – but one or the other attack from the big names should be expected when tomorrow's mountain finish at the Blockhaus. We are looking forward to it!
