Test: With the Whaka, Stevens proves that northerners can also build mountain bikes. Like many others, it relies on thick plus tires and medium-length suspension travel. A special feature is the brand new Shimano MTB motor, which brings the bike's geometry very close to that of a conventional MTB. This is nice for experienced mountain bikers who switch to a motor-assisted bike. However, the Stevens does not have the characteristic smoothness of other E-MTBs. The equipment is functional and works flawlessly, as does the chassis. The engine is very balanced, homogeneous and always powerful. Only the operation via a shift lever irritated again and again. The display is very small, but easy to read. Saddle and grips gave the test riders cause for criticism.
