MTB cycling: Last weekend, the Enduro World Series 2017 started the racing season with the Giant Toa Enduro. Heavy rain turned the opening event into downright chaos with wild falls. Regardless of the conditions, the men from New Zealand presented themselves and completely occupied the podium.
With a lead of almost four seconds, Wyn Masters (GT Factory Racing) catapulted himself into first place. Second place went to last year's winner Matt Walker, followed by Eddie Masters, brother of this year's winner. In the women's race, Cecile Ravanel (Commencal Vallnord Enduro Team) took the lead. She was able to win six out of seven stages. In the end, with an impressive time cushion of over three minutes, she proved that drivers who live in sunny southern France can also handle mud very well. The view of second place among the women is pleasing from a German point of view: Ines Thoma (Canyon Factory Enduro Team) was able to gain more than 30 seconds on the third-placed Swiss Anita Gehrig (Ibis Cycles Enduro Race Team).
In terms of teams, GT Factory Racing leads the overall standings with 1.050 points after the first race. The Canyon Factory Enduro Team took second place with 960 points, and the Ibis Cycles Enduro Race Team took third place with 820 points.
The Shimano Enduro Tasmania (Australia) event on April 9 marks the second stop of the Enduro World Series 2017. A total of eight races will be held this year, with the final taking place on September 30/1. October 2017 in Finale Ligure (Italy).
