Market: Shimano is expanding its S-Phyre clothing line for 2017, in which shoes and socks have already been available since last season. The new jersey, bib shorts, skinsuit and gloves are aimed at performance-oriented riders with the highest demands.
Shimano's S-Phyre clothing line was launched last year: Since then, two S-Phyre models have spearheaded the racing range of shoes, the XC9 (Cross Country) and the RC9 (Road). For 2017 they are now going all out and are providing the shoes with a complete kit – from the jersey to the bib to the gloves; a skinsuit will also be available. The goal remains: The best possible performance for the highest demands.
In order to achieve this ambitious goal, you look at the driver and the clothing as a whole and turn the appropriate screws to tease out the last percentage point of efficiency. In the development process, they cooperated with bike fitting experts and professional riders to determine which details are ultimately important in order to get one or two more watts onto the asphalt. Marco Zaja, who is responsible for clothing at Shimano, is satisfied with the end result: “We have used all of our performance know-how to create a clothing line that has been thought through down to the last detail. S-Phyre lives up to what the cycling world has come to expect from Shimano.”
During the development process, the first step was to consider which factors have a performance-reducing effect on the rider and the overall bicycle system. They identified resistance, weight and mass as the three "culprits" and set about minimizing their influence. The S-Phyre clothing is therefore not only extremely light, but the special surface also reduces air resistance. Cleverly used materials and a cut optimized for absolute performance support natural movements on the bike.
Shimano S-Phyre 2017: The jersey
The S-Phyre jersey will initially come in two colors: In addition to the typical S-Phyre combination of black with blue highlights, there will also be a high-visibility variant in bright yellow. The seamless shoulder area is shaped in a complex 3D process in such a way that the fabric nestles perfectly against the skin when riding and does not crease, which not only reduces comfort but also has a negative effect on aerodynamics.
The three rear pockets are arranged and shaped in such a way that they are easy to reach even while riding and in potentially hectic situations. The decision to use a full-length zip on the front is also welcome. This makes the jersey universally usable even in hot temperatures.
Shimano S-Phyre 2017: The bib shorts
With the S-Phyre Bibshort, there are no seams in the thigh area. Unpleasant pressure and friction points can be eliminated and the sporty cut improves the performance of the muscles through compression. On the inside, unlike most other manufacturers, they do not use silicone cuffs, but instead use woven, non-slip materials that also prevent slipping, but are said to be significantly more comfortable. Something special has been thought of in the critical transition area between saddle and thighs; the special material structure at this point reduces resistance and optimizes movement.
In the development of the S-Phyre seat pad, new paths were deliberately taken and already known and established forms were detached. The long slit between the two buttocks catches the eye at first glance. This separation is intended to support the natural movement sequences, which not only improves performance, but especially comfort. Shock absorbing materials were strategically incorporated into the pad and the final shape was developed in collaboration with pro riders.
Shimano S-Phyre 2017: The skin suit
For all those who do not want to make any compromises in terms of performance, Shimano also offers a one-piece skinsuit in the S-Phyre Line, which combines the advantages of jersey and bib, but is just that little bit more aerodynamic.
Shimano S-Phyre 2017: The gloves
The influence of gloves on performance and comfort while driving is often underestimated. In order to avoid signs of fatigue in the hands even on long days in the saddle with many braking and shifting operations, the S-Phyre glove has very few seams and the preformed cut is optimized for a sporty grip position. Breathable mesh material on the knuckles and on the back of the hand ensure a pleasant climate even on hot days.
The palm of the hand does not require any padding and should offer consistently good grip in all conditions. In favor of aerodynamics, there is no Velcro or similar and instead a simple, minimalist pull-over design is used. Thanks to the narrow cut, you don't have to worry about slipping, according to Shimano.
Shimano S-Phyre 2017: prices and availability
Regarding the prices, Shimano is still silent - but since all S-Phyre products should be available in stores from mid-February, publication of the recommended retail prices should be expected in the near future. The products will only be available in selected S-Phyre Premium Stores. A corresponding dealer locator on the official Shimano site will be available in the near future.
