Test: The Spank Spike Pedal is very popular with downhillers and freeriders. Gravity bikers appreciate the high level of grip and the stable, high-quality design, as well as the fine details. The Spank Ooozy pedal from the same company is said to offer trail riders the advantages of the Spike Flat pedal, but with a significantly lower weight.

Construction and design of the pedal
The center bar of the pedal, designed in a Y design, is striking, allowing for generously dimensioned cut-outs. Also very striking are the sharply slanted corners, which are intended to minimize snagging on stones and tree stumps. The height of the pedal body is a slim 12 mm, the axle area is only strongly curved on the side facing the crank. Without this bulge, the tread of the pedal is about 100 x 100 mm, adding the bulge results in a width of 110 mm. Nine pins protrude upwards per pedal and side. The outer pins have a height of 5 mm, the inner three pins are 1 mm less. The aluminum pedal body rotates around a scandium-enriched steel axle. Oversized seals and robust bottom brackets should give the pedal a long life. In order to be able to realize the compact height, the manufacturer also used sealed IGUS bushings when developing the pedal.
Before the test / visual impression
The pedals are delivered without pins screwed in, this work must be done by the rider himself before the first ride. Depending on the holes, two different pin types are used. The manufacturer includes the tool required for mounting the pins. The pins, a maximum of six per pedal side, are mounted from below in the front and rear area of the pedal body. The pins are special Allen screws that taper towards the top and have no thread in the upper area. For extra grip, three external pins are used on each side of the pedal, which are screwed into the pedal body from above. The manufacturer does not use a screw lock for all pins. Completely assembled, the pedal weighs 182 grams, so the pair weighs a total of 364 grams. The pedal body rotates around the axle with slight resistance due to the inboard friction seal. Not only the look, but also the workmanship of the Spank Oozy Flat Pedal inspires! This is also evidenced by the fine cutouts made to reduce weight.
field test
We rode the Spank Oozy Flat Pedal with MTB all-round shoes from Rose, Vans, various sneakers and trekking shoes. The pedal gives the rider - regardless of the shoes - a sovereign and secure grip, both in dry and wet conditions. Thanks to the large cut-outs, the pedal offers very good self-cleaning even during mud fights. Standing on the Spank Oozy Flat Pedal is very comfortable, the footwork for guiding the bike is ideally supported by the platform pedal. We did not notice the curvature in the area of the pedal crank when riding, although the individual foot position can of course play a role here. The flat design and the slanted corners minimize the impact of the pedal, Spank's calculation definitely works here too. The slight turning resistance of the pedal body, which is supposed to prevent wild spins during tricks, is not noticeable when pedaling.
After the test
No grinding, cracking, squeaking or uneven running - both the bearings and the seals are still doing their job without restrictions. The sloping surfaces do show scratches due to some ground contact, but this is just as inevitable when trail riding as the slight signs of wear and tear on the stepping surface.

René says
I've had this pedal for 1,5 years now and I find it disappointing how often I disassemble these parts. These pedals need more care than your bike's chain!
The stand, the grip, the processing, the cleaning and the optics are great.
Storage a disaster.
Manufacturer support not responding. A reason for me to avoid the manufacturer.
