Product news: Conway E-Bikes 2016: From trail fully to retro racer

14 January 2016 by Marcus Degen

Market: The German bike manufacturer Conway is giving its already extremely comprehensive e-bike and e-MTB portfolio a comprehensive update this season. The top models have the new 1×11 drive from Shimano and the Nyon board computer from Bosch. Also brand new are the two 130mm E-Fullies and the Cafe Urban Retro Bike EMRetro Race. We have an overview of all models.

Conway e-bikes – Bosch drives

Conway will not change anything when it comes to drives in the 2016 model year - they continue to rely on know-how and quality from Bosch for all models. The southern German manufacturer has been one of the driving forces in the e-bike sector for many years and has repeatedly had innovations ready in recent years with the Nyon control unit and the new Performance CX drive.

In 2016, Conway's e-bikes and e-MTBs use the entire range of Bosch drives and control units. While the inexpensive entry-level bikes rely on the all-round drive of the Active Line and the well-known Intuvia display, the respective top models feature the new, powerful Performance CX drive with a Nyon control unit.

Conway EMF – 130mm E-Fullies

Conway is breaking new ground with the two E-Fullies from the EMF series. While there was already a large selection of e-MTBs in the range in recent years, these were limited exclusively to hardtails. With the Conway EMF 327 and EMF 427, there are now two full-suspension mountain bikes with an electric drive for the first time. While both models share the aluminum frame with 130mm travel, the features of the two models differ significantly.

While the top model Conway EMF 427 is equipped with a Rockshox Reba RL suspension fork and the new 1×11 XT gears from Shimano, the designers of the smaller brother EMF 327 were a bit more price-conscious. Nevertheless, with a Rockshox Recon Solor Air suspension fork and a 2x XT/Deore gear mix, you are still well equipped for rough trail excursions.

With a head angle of 68,5°, a short head tube and a comparatively wide reach, the frame promises a fun geometry, even if the long chainstays due to the design due to the mid-engine and the wide wheelbase might reduce the bike’s agility a little – this fate is shared However, Conway EMF with all other E-Fullies.

Conway EMR - The Conway e-Hardtails 2016

With the hardtails, the tried-and-tested product structure is retained: two wheel sizes, 27,5″ and 29″, and two different aluminum frames are offered, which differ in particular in the areas of motor and battery integration. While the battery is located on the down tube in the cheaper models - as is the case with many other manufacturers - the four premium models have a specially developed box that fits perfectly into the frame triangle.

This black, triangular box not only houses the battery, but also offers space for other items such as a charger, multi-tool or rain jacket. What both frames have in common is the completely internal lines and cables.

Conway EMR 227 SE

 Bosch Active 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 400Wh
Circuit: Shimano acera
suspension fork: Suntour XCR 32LO R
Price: €1999,95

The Conway EMR 227 SE is the cheapest of Conway's E-MTBs. A Bosch Active-Line mid-motor is used as the drive, which is supplied with energy by a 400Wh battery. Drive and brakes come from Shimano, more precisely from the Acera group. The Suntour XCR air suspension fork has a manual lockout and offers reliable suspension and damping for moderate excursions into the world off the beaten track.

Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano Deore
suspension fork: Suntour XCR 32LO R
Price: €2599,95

The EMR 327 comes with a Deore drive from Shimano and the current, lively Bosch Performance CX motor - so it offers a lot of added value for its almost €600 surcharge compared to the entry-level model 227 SE. The 500Wh battery also ensures a slightly better range. As with the smaller model, the XCR 327 air suspension fork from the Asian manufacturer Suntour is also used in the 32.

Conway EMR 327 Plus

CONWAY_EMR_327Pluswheel size: 27,5 Plus
Drive:
Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano Deore
suspension fork: Suntour Raidon LO R
Price: €2999,95

The Conway EMR 327 Plus pays tribute to one of the biggest trends in the industry at the moment: 650b+ were little more than exotics up until a little over a year ago, but now almost every major manufacturer has at least one model with extra-wide tires in their portfolio. The plus size not only offers noticeably more comfort, but also significantly better grip due to the larger contact surface of the tires - the rolling resistance increases slightly, but this is of secondary importance, especially with an E-MTB. Otherwise, the equipment is the same as that of the 'slim' 327 - with one exception: In the 327 Plus, Conway uses the higher-quality Suntour Raidon suspension fork.

Conway EMR 427

conwayemr427wheel size: 27,5"
Drive: Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano Deore
suspension fork: Rockshox Recon Silver
Price: €2799,95

The Conway EMR 427 shares most of the equipment with the EMR 327 – instead of the Suntour fork, however, the 427 has a significantly lighter and noticeably more powerful fork with the Rockshox Recon Silver, which can also handle trips on rough trails without a murmur.

Conway EMR 527

Drive: Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano XT
suspension fork: Rockshox Reba RL
Price: €3399,95

The EMR 527 is, so to speak, the top model of Conway's e-hardtails with a standard frame. When it comes to equipment, hardly anything is left to be desired: With a complete Shimano XT group, very light Rockshox Reba RL suspension fork and the Bosch Performance CX motor, you have a top-equipped hardtail here, with which longer off-road adventures will not be a problem.

Conway EMR 627

CONWAY_EMR_627wheel size: 27,5"
Drive: Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano XT/Deore
suspension fork: Rockshox Recon Silver
Price: €3199,95

The Conway EMR 627 is the entry point into Conway's 'Premium E-Hardtails'. Of course, what is particularly striking at first glance is the idiosyncratic frame with the dominant black box in the frame triangle and without a full seat tube. The slim integration of the mid-engine is also visually successful. When it comes to equipment, there is an upper middle class: An XT/Deore circuit mix and a Rockshox Recon Silver Solo Air suspension fork should easily suffice most riders in terms of performance.

Conway EMR 827

CONWAY_EMR_827wheel size: 27,5"
Drive: Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Nyon
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano XT
suspension fork: Rockshox Reba RL
Price: €3999,95

The absolute top model among the e-hardtails is the Conway EMR 827 and, for its steep price of almost €4000, also offers a correspondingly high-quality equipment; 1×11 XT drive from Shimano including the complete XT group, Rockshox Reba RL suspension fork, the Performance CX drive from Bosch including the Nyon control unit, which combines useful features such as navigation or power measurement and also an interface with the smartphone via Bluetooth offers.

Conway EMR 429

conwayemr429wheel size: 29"
Drive: Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano XT/Deore
suspension fork: Rockshox Recon Silver
Price: €2899,95

The entry-level model among the 29″ E-Hardtails offers really good equipment for the estimated price with an XT-Deore circuit mix, Recon Silver fork from Rock Shox and Bosch Performance CX drive. The bright yellow of the frame may not be for everyone, but it's a welcome change from all the muted colors of the bike market.

Conway EMR 529

Drive:
Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano XT
suspension fork: Rockshox Reba RL
Price: €3499,95

With XT gears, CX drive and Reba RL suspension fork, the Conway EMR 529 not only offers very good equipment, but also a really good look. The matt black frame with logos in stealth look is combined with some light green anodized attachments such as the seat post, stem or chainring guard. We think it's very pretty!

Conway EMR 629

CONWAY_EMR_629wheel size: 29"
Drive: Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano XT/Deore
suspension fork: Rockshox Recon Silver
Price: €3199,95

The EMR 629 is one of two 'Premium 29″ E-Hardtails' – like the 27,5″ counterparts, the large-wheeled siblings also come with the distinctive battery box in the frame triangle. The equipment is really successful: XT/Deore mix from Shimano and a Rockshox Recon Silver also cut a fine figure far off the road.

Conway EMR 829

CONWAY_EMR_829wheel size: 29"
Drive: Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Nyon
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano XT
suspension fork: Rockshox Reba RL
Price: €3999,95

The 29″ top model EMR 829 comes with the same equipment as its 27,5″ counterpart: 1x11XT drive from Shimano, Performance CX drive, Reba RL suspension fork – hardly anything is left to be desired. The Nyon control unit for the drive is also much more than just a gimmick and much more an on-board computer that not only analyzes and displays driving data, but can also function as a navigation device or interface to the smartphone.

Conway EMR Urban and EMC - City and Travel Companions

You can see that mountain bike frames and bikes are used for more than just trails or off-road adventures every day on German roads. Many city cyclists also appreciate the comfortable geometry, the large tire clearance and wide tires with good propulsion. That's why Conway is launching several urban speedsters or touring bikes on the market in 2016, which have their roots in the mountain bikes discussed above.

CONWAY_EMRetro_Race_dyna

The bikes come with less profiled tires, fixed mudguards and, in the case of the two urban bikes, also with hub gears instead of derailleur gears. With the city runabouts, an unnecessary suspension fork has also been sensibly avoided - the self-damping of the wide tires is high enough to absorb deeper potholes and without a suspension fork the bike is directly lighter and requires less maintenance.

Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 400Wh
Circuit: Shimano Alfine 8-speed
suspension fork: rigid fork
Price: €2399,95

Plain and black - that's how the Conway EMR Urban comes along - the almost €2.400 e-urban bike with Alfine 8-speed hub gears and permanently installed mudguards is completely black. The 400Wh battery offers more than enough juice for longer trips through the streets of German cities.

Conway EM Retro Race

CONWAY_EMRetro_Racewheel size: 27,5"
Drive: Bosch Performance CX 250W
Display: Bosch Nyon
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano Alfine 8-speed
suspension fork: rigid fork
Price: €3799,95

We don't really know which drawer to put the Conway EMRetro Race in - urban bike? Cafe racer? Maybe also commuters? It doesn't matter - with the wide Big One tires from Schwalbe, permanently installed mudguards, Racktime luggage rack, LED lighting from Supernova and 8-speed Alfine hub gears from Shimano, the black/brown bike has a very wide range of uses. For almost €3.800 you also get the Bosch Nyon board computer and an overall really more than successful look.

Conway EMC 327

Drive: Bosch Active 250W
Display: Bosch Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 400Wh
Circuit: Shimano Deore
suspension fork: Suntour XCR 32 LO R
Price: €2299,95

At Conway, the touring and travel e-bikes are hidden behind the abbreviation EMC. With permanently installed lighting, mudguards, luggage racks and side stands, they are reminiscent of the two urban bikes mentioned above, but the EMC bikes with derailleur gears and suspension fork are much more sporty. The Conway EMC 327 is the cheaper of the two touring bikes and comes with good Deore gears from Shimano, the cheap Active drive from Bosch and an air suspension fork from Suntour.

Conway EMC 427

Display: Bosch 4 Intuvia
Battery pack: Bosch BMS 500Wh
Circuit: Shimano Deore
suspension fork: Suntour XCR 32 Lo R
Price: €2599,95

Except for the more powerful performance drive from Bosch and the larger battery, the equipment of the EMC 427 is the same as that of the EMC 327 - there is also a fresh silver/yellow instead of the dark black/blue design.
