MTB cycling: Three new stage locations and the first start outside of Germany, the 19th edition of the Bike Transalp powered by Sigma provides a lot of excitement in advance. Just a few weeks before the official start of registration, the organizer announced the new route with a bang.
The date for the event has been set for some time. The seven-day MTB stage race will take place from July 17th to 23rd, 2016. For the first time in the history of the Bike Transalp, Imst will be the starting point outside of Germany. The route of the Bike Transalp 2016 will be 519 kilometers long over the main ridge of the Alps. The participants will have to conquer no fewer than 17751 meters in altitude in the seven days.
As in 2014, the route runs from Imst through Tyrol to Nauders. The program for the first stage on July 17th is therefore 89 kilometers and 2960 meters in altitude. Instead of going to South Tyrol, the second stage leads to Scoul. The stage location in Switzerland will welcome the participants after 56 kilometers and a hard-fought 2135 meters in altitude. After the start in Scoul, Livigno is the destination of the third stage after almost 73 kilometers and 2623 meters in altitude. With Bormio and Mezzana, two new stage locations follow one after the other.
The key data of the route Livigno / Bormio are given by the organizer with 73 kilometers and 2573 meters of altitude, the 86 kilometers long fifth stage from Bormio to Mezzana will also cost a lot of grains with 3073 meters of altitude. The sixth and therefore penultimate stage leads over 88 kilometers and 2363 meters in altitude from Mezzana to Trento.
Surprisingly, after nine years in a row, the goal of the Bike Transalp 2016 is no longer Riva del Garda, but Arco, which is a little further north. The spectators in the new stage location Arco will certainly celebrate the cyclists frenetically as usual after the 53 kilometers and 2014 meters of altitude difference on the last day.
The official registration process for the Bike Transalp 2016 starts on December 8th at 12 noon.
