Cycling: Stage win for Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) in the Tour of Spain. He prevailed in the mass sprint in Málaga against Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin).
Peter Sagan collected no fewer than five second places in the Tour de France. At the Vuelta a España, it worked out right at the first sprint finish with a win. With that, the Slovakian completed a strong team effort from Tinkoff-Saxo, who had worked hard during the stage. In the finale, Sagan oriented himself to John Degenkolb's rear wheel and sprinted from there to victory. Nacer Bouhanni was no longer able to pass Sagan. Bouhanni's second place was still impressive: After a fall 43 kilometers he was clearly struggling and it took him quite a while to catch up with the peloton.
There were no changes in the overall rating. Esteban Chaves (Orica Green Edge) continues to lead by five seconds ahead of Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) and 15 seconds ahead of Nicolas Roche (Team Sky).
For a long time, a leading group of eight dominated the 158,4 kilometers between Mijas and Málaga. The breakaways included Sylvain Chavanel (IAM Cycling) and Walter Pedraza (Colombia), who wore the jersey for the best climber on behalf of leader Chaves. However, the two mountain prizes of the day went to fellow escapee Omar Fraile (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), who also took the lead in the mountains classification. Chavanel secured the sprint classification in Torre del Mar. Shortly thereafter, the breakaway group's harmony was broken and Alexis Gougeard (AG2R) and Maarten Tjallingii (LottoNL-Jumbo) tried their luck alone. A hopeless endeavor and under Tinkoff-Saxo's pace dictate, one breakaway after the other was collected again. Tjallingii was the last to give up and was swallowed up by the field with 14 kilometers to go. In the final kilometers, Movistar and Giant-Alpecin took charge and paved the way for the mass sprint. However, the glorious winner in Málaga was Sagan.
Tomorrow, 209,6 kilometers await the drivers between Estepona and Vejer de la Fontera. It could be difficult for the sprinters on the flat stage, as the last five kilometers climb another 150 meters in altitude, and shortly before the finish line there are 400 meters with an incline of over 10 percent.
