Cycling: After the prologue in the Belgian municipality of Bornem, the second stage of the Tour of Belgium yesterday went from Lochristi to Knokke-Heist. After 178,5 kilometers, the Belgian Tom Boonen (Etixx-Quick Step) was able to assert himself in a mass sprint in front of Arnaud Démare (FDJ) and Jens Debusschere (Lotto-Soudal).
Despite Boonen's victory, Austria's Matthias Brändle (IAM) remains the overall leader in the standings and can therefore successfully defend the red jersey. With a lead of two seconds, the former hour record holder still leads Rohan Dennis (BMC). Tom Boonen, on the other hand, improved from 29th to seventh place.
The demanding third stage awaits the riders with some cobblestone sections. After the start in Knokke-Heist, the route leads over 201,1 kilometers to Herzele. The race will be broadcast live from 14.00 p.m. today on www.sport.be.
