Cycling: The Giro d'Italia is over for André Greipel - the 32-year-old will no longer compete in today's time trial. After that, the high mountains await the participants – no terrain for the sprint specialists from Team Lotto-Soudal. The balance of this year's Giro is quite satisfactory with a day's victory in the 6th stage.
Greipel's driver Greg Henderson from New Zealand will also leave the Tour of Italy. This was announced by the team this morning. Yesterday's twelfth stage was the last real chance for the sprinters before the really difficult stages came up. Unfortunately, the lead-out didn't work out as desired at the decisive moment and Greipel didn't get into a position for the sprint. His personal conclusion is sobering: “I'm glad we won a stage but I was hoping for more. The upcoming stages are made for the classification riders, which is why we have decided to leave the Giro in view of the upcoming goals.”
The rest of the race program has not yet been decided, but Greipel will probably take part in a few smaller (stage) races before starting the Tour de France in July in order to preserve his good form recently. At this year's tour, numerous stages are again waiting for the sprint aces, where Greipel wants to be able to draw from the full.
