Cycling: The countdown is on. In exactly 100 days the 102nd Tour de France will start in Utrecht with a 14km time trial. Christian Prudhomme paid another short visit to the Dutch university town with some other cycling greats almost 3 months before the tour town.
The Tour Director, along with Bernard Hinault, Bernard Thévenet, Jan Janssen and Joop Zoetemelk, accepted an invitation from the Mayor of Utrecht, who wanted to show the important visitor that Utrecht is not only ready for the Tour, but also proudly presented one of the largest bicycle construction projects in Europe at the city's central train station: This is where the world's largest bicycle garage is being built, which when completed will offer a whopping 12.000 two-wheelers safe shelter.
Prudhomme was deeply impressed: “This country represents cycling like no other and so does this city. Of course we all love cycling and thrills, but we also want to show the world what a great means of transport the bike is. Of course, that also played a role when we chose this place and I hope that our guest performance in July will inspire many other cities and municipalities to follow this great example.”
