Tour de France #1: Lampaert slips into yellow in the Copenhagen rain

July 1, 2022 by Michael Behringer

Lampaert Tour de France Copenhagen

Cycling: Yves Lampaert surprisingly won the start of the 2022 Tour de France. The Belgian was five seconds faster than compatriot Wout van Aert in rainy Copenhagen with a time of 15:18. So he will start tomorrow in the yellow jersey. Tadej Pogacar should also be satisfied. Last year's Slovenian winner set the best time of all contenders for overall victory.

Lampaert shocks the time trial elite

Our Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) as the opening winner in the time trial in Copenhagen nobody would have expected. The Belgian left the entire time trial elite behind on the 13,2 kilometer course through the Danish capital. He benefited from the slightly decreasing rain, which characterized the entire time trial and caused a few falls. First sat Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Deceuninck) set the best time. The narrow curves and the adverse conditions suited the Dutchman well. But when the rain stopped, he had to leave the hot seat. The best times tumbled. It followed Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers). But the world champion was not even allowed to sit down, because immediately behind him wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) was even faster. When everyone thought that the winner would be certain, the hour struck Yves Lampaert. The Belgian was another five seconds faster. Would probably have a chance of winning too Christophe Laporte (Jumbo – Visma) had. But the Frenchman fell after the best time in the first sector.

Pogacar and Vingegaard faster than Roglic

Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) must today not only a smack of Tadej pogacar (UAE) put away, but also has the team-internal duel against jonas vingegaard (Jumbo – Visma) lost. Of course, 25 hundredths aren't worth mentioning - and the nine seconds on Pogacar aren't earth-shattering either - but the winner of the Critérium du Dauphiné actually wanted to gain time on his opponents in the fight against the clock. After all, Roglic was faster than many other contenders for the podium. Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) lost ten seconds on him, Alexander Vlasov (Bora-hansgrohe) 16.

Not a good day for the Swiss

The two Swiss Stephen Bissegger (EF Education – EasyPost) and Stefan Kung (Groupama – FDJ) certainly imagined the start of the Grand Depart of the Tour de France differently. Starting early - like most of the favorites - they didn't really cope with the weather conditions. Stefan Bissegger fell twice and therefore had no chance at all of a good placement. European Champion Stefan Küng stayed on the bike, but in terms of time, he also had no chance. The time trial in Copenhagen was probably too short and too technical for him. Even the German pros couldn't show their best performance today. Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe) was the fastest German with a time of 15:42. unlucky Jonas slip (EF Education - EasyPost). The German also fell and, according to initial reports, sustained very painful injuries.
