Cycling: The four-time cross world champion Bart Wellens has announced the end of his career. Reasons for the resignation of the 36-year-old Belgian are said to be a lack of sporting success and constant back pain.
Bart Wellens was able to celebrate his first major successes in cyclocross back in 1996/1997 as Belgian U23 champion and second at the U23 world championship. Successes that he promptly repeated in the following season. In the next two years he successfully defended the title of Belgian U23 champion, but also won the U23 world championship.
Among the Belgian's greatest successes are the victories at the Cyclocross World Championships in Monopoli in 2002/2003 and in Pontchateau in 2003/2004. In the 2002/2003 season, he was also able to win the overall ranking of the Cross World Cup. Winning the Belgian championship followed in 2004/2005. Bart Wellens won the silver medal at the 2005/2006 World Championships. The Belgian was able to celebrate the last important championship title in his career in the following season by winning the Belgian championship again. Bart Wellens has not less than 102 victories in the course of his career.
