Test: Everyone knows the problem of finding perfect protection for the shoe when rainy racing or training days are imminent. For this reason we took a closer look at the RaceAqua from the Danish manufacturer GripGrab.
When putting them on for the first time, the very good fit was noticeable - the overshoe sits on the cycling shoes like a second skin. Since you are reluctant to do without aerodynamics in the race despite overshoes, GripGrab has chosen this tight fit for the RaceAqua and thus made the overshoe suitable for competitions. The upper material made of nylon and polyurethane offers optimal protection against water and wind. Only after a few kilometers in the rain did I feel the water slowly finding its way into my shoe. This was not due to the quality of the material, but to the openings required for the overshoe - here you have to make some compromises in terms of weather protection. Thanks to the tight fit, however, it is noticeably more difficult for water to penetrate.
The low weight and the non-absorbent material ensure that the RaceAqua is not a burden even in the rain and is comfortable to wear at all times. The zipper on the back makes it easy to put on and take off. The upper waistband and the bottom are made of a reflective material - a nice safety plus in adverse visibility conditions.
Cleaning the shoes is a bit cumbersome: GripGrab recommends simply wiping the overshoes with a damp cloth and not washing them in the machine. One should consider whether the black variant is not a better choice than the white one. The wetness after a few training rides left clear visual traces on our test model, which could no longer be removed even by hand washing.
