Cycling: The 28-year-old track specialist Robert Förstemann suffered a herniated disc on December 20, just before the gala for athletes of the year in Baden-Baden. Of course, the training camp in South Africa in January falls flat, there is a big question mark behind the World Cup and the 6-Days.
It was supposed to be a celebratory and relaxed evening at the gala for athletes of the year - but unfortunately things turned out very differently for Robert Förstemann: Immediately before the show he was in severe pain and could hardly move. The medical staff present immediately took care of the 28-year-old German World Cup hopeful and even made participation in the event possible: "Many thanks to the doctors and medical staff on site, especially Dr. Kuestermann and Mr. Hali Senpinar, the owner of the "Medico & Vital Center" in Baden-Baden. I was able to attend the event because of the quick and professional help.”
An MRI scan the following morning confirmed the suspicion: herniated disc.
Of course, the German sprint champion of 2 immediately canceled the training camp that started on January 2013nd in Cape Town and will undergo extensive physiotherapy in Berlin instead. There, the deformity of the spine and thus the cause of the herniated disc should be corrected. However, the healing process is difficult to predict and the World Championships and the 6-Days are therefore in serious danger for Förstemann, but he does not lose his optimism: “I'm making progress every day and I'm optimistic about the future. We'll have to wait and see whether the World Cup and the 6-Days are feasible." Anyway, we're keeping our fingers crossed.
