Test: Rapha has always polarized. Some swear by the simple, elegant and functional products, for others they are boring, overpriced fashion accessories. This is unlikely to be any different with the Deep Winter Gloves - but our test shows that the gloves are not only worth considering for Rapha fans.
Style, look, trendy, hip or not hip - one thing is certain right from the start of our test: When it comes to processing quality, nobody can beat the English: perfect seams, high-quality materials and an outstanding feel. The outer material is firm, but still elastic and on the back of the hand you will find a wide stripe of also reflective material in addition to the reflective Rapha logo. The Velcro on the waistband makes a robust impression and is really solid. Fleece inserts on both thumbs absorb every drop of sweat.
The inside of the Rapha Deep Winter Gloves also impresses with its simple elegance and understatement. Black Pittards leather dominates the grip area, and a special coating is used on the middle and index fingers, which can also be used to operate touchscreens. The padding is very thin, but still comfortable and effective. In addition, you do not lose the feeling for the handlebars.
The consistently positive impression so far continues when you put on the gloves: They prove to be surprisingly comfortable, sporty but not too tight - so the area of application is not just limited to the bike. We also really liked the tight fitting inner glove. The loose connection between the inner and outer glove is often a weak point with lined gloves - but not with the Rapha Deep Winter Gloves. The two layers are firmly welded together, with a warming Primaloft lining and a waterproof OutDry membrane in between. Our test ride turns into an unexpected endurance test: Shortly after we set off, an icy wind whips our faces and the drizzle turns into typical autumnal sleet at around 0°C. Now the Deep Winter Gloves really flex their muscles. The grip on the handlebars is excellent even when it's wet, we don't slip a millimeter, the icy raindrops roll off the water-repellent nylon and our hands stay warm despite the cold wind. After about half an hour in these conditions we have reached our goal: our hands are still warm, although the cold slowly crept into our gloves. Should it be a few degrees colder, the Deep Winter Gloves would probably have to capitulate to the wintry conditions.
