In 2015 the Velothon will take place in Berlin for the eighth time. Organizers and the city of Berlin were able to agree on a suitable weekend in May: on May 30th and 31st, 2015, the capital will once again be all about racing bikes.
In addition to the Cyclassics in Hamburg, the Velothon is one of the largest cycling events in Europe. 15.000 starters are expected in the amateur race on Sunday. Then again there will be two laps over 60 or 120 kilometers to choose from. The start is at Potsdamer Platz and the finish is on Straße des 17. Juni. Anyone who has completed this historic lap through the formerly divided city on completely closed roads will confirm that this race is one of the absolute must-do events that every racing cyclist must have experienced at least once: past the zoo, over the Ku'Damm and that Runway at Tempelhof Airport, through Grunewald, start and finish at the Brandenburg Gate, with the Reichstag in the background – despite the high speed on this flat course, goosebumps are always the order of the day.
The supporting program of this "family weekend" is also impressive and leaves no time for boredom. On Saturday, the big bicycle fair on June 17 – between the Großer Stern and the Brandenburg Gate – is the focus; the Kids Velothon offers the little ones the opportunity to gain their first racing experience and on Sunday, after the Jedermann, there will be a big showdown for the pros. At around 200 kilometers, they deliver one of the few remaining and top-class one-day races on German soil. Experience has shown that this will ultimately be decided in a thrilling sprint duel.
Registration for the amateur races is open from December 11, 2014: www.garmin-velothon-berlin.de
