Cycling: As the International Cycling Union UCI confirmed at the World Championships, the Rhenish classic will take place next year on the second Sunday in June.
The official racing calendar for the coming competition year has been set and is definitely trend-setting for the future of the oldest German professional cycling classic still in existence. With the move to early summer, the course is set for a successful future for Rund um Köln in good time before the 100th event.
“We are pleased that we have now received official confirmation from the World Cycling Union UCI for the new date. Early this year, after many positive discussions with our municipal working group, we agreed on the new date on the second Sunday in June,” says Artur Tabat, who organized the cycling classic last Easter Monday (April 21, 2014) for the 41st time. delighted. “Therefore nothing stands in the way of the 100th staging of our beautiful cycling classic in June 2016. For our anniversary we want to celebrate a cycling festival in the whole region with lots of sunshine.”
The dates for the coming years have already been set and Rund um Köln will take place on the following dates: June 14, 2015, June 12, 2016, June 11, 2017, June 10, 2018. Only in 2019 will the second Sunday in the June to the Pentecost weekend, when many events are already taking place in the Bergisches Land.
“We will of course find a solution for 2019 with everyone involved in good time. By moving the race day to June, we are ensuring significantly better framework conditions for the event,” says the technical director of the cycling classic, Alexander Donike. “Because in June we expect significantly warmer temperatures. In addition, we will meet the numerous demands and wishes of our many hobby drivers for a better date for the event.”
Hobby cyclists can secure their personal premiere racing experience at an early stage. Because for the 11th time, the numerous amateurs will tackle the route from Cologne's Rheinauhafen through the Bergisches Land before the professionals. “Due to the new race date, we expect up to 5.000 participants. Even at this early stage, more than 500 starters have registered for the hobby race,” says Alexander Donike happily.
In 2015, participants in the ŠKODA VELODOM will again have a choice of two route lengths, over 69 and 127 kilometers. The starting fee for the short loop through the Bergisches Land is currently 10 euros with the early bird discount until November 2015, 40. For the 127-kilometer route, 50 euros will be charged for early bookers
