Cycling: MTN-Qhubeka signs Edvald Boasson-Hagen. The Norwegian has often been associated with the Tinkoff-Saxo team in the past few days. Now, however, the South Africans have won the race.
Boasson Hagen, who has been with Team Sky since 2010, has signed a two-year contract with MTN-Qhubeka, according to various media. The sporting director of the team, Manuel Lacambra, confirmed the change to the Spanish TV broadcaster TVE.
The 27-year-old Boasson Hagen, who had made a successful debut at Sky, had hardly had a chance in the last two years. This was mainly due to the team's focus on the Tour de France.
"He is a great driver and he will help us in the classics and the grand tours", according to Lacambra.
In an official statement, team boss Douglas Ryder added: “We believe he is one of the best riders in the world and we look forward to him achieving good results with us and being a good mentor to our African talent. We want to be one of the best teams in the world and this is a step in that direction.”
Boasson Hagen, who is said to have received a dated contract, is taking the same path as Gerald Ciolek and Linus Gerdemann before him. The team is currently contesting the Vuelta a Espana but would like to snag a place in the Tour de France next year.
