Test: Comfort road bikes are currently very popular. However, finding a good mix of pure driving pleasure and sporty agility is a tightrope walk. Canyon tried to do this and a few weeks ago with the Endurance CF launched a gran fondo car that is about to redefine driving performance.
Ever since the bike was presented on the eve of the Garmin Velothon in Berlin, we've been able to feel the bike's teeth.
equipment and practice
With the canyon Endurance CF 9.0 SL we received the top variant of the new flagship from Koblenz. The black racer is equipped with the mechanical one Dura-Ace from Shimano - matching the concept with a compact crank whose 50/34 teeth are combined with a cassette that has a spread of 11 to 28 teeth. The trains are optically laid out inside.
The cockpit consists of Ritchey WCS-Components. The wheels, on the other hand, are supplied by DT Swiss, with the 1520 gram light R23 Splines look good on the bike. Combined with Continentals Grand Prix 4000s On the one hand they offer good propulsion, on the other hand they also offer good comfort - the be-all and end-all of the Endurance CF 9.0 SL.
This is particularly evident in the frameset. This is characterized by a slim fork and a straight frame. Its top tube, like the seat tube, has a narrow diameter, unlike the bulbous down tube, which ends in a massive bottom bracket area. The relatively long head tube of 159 millimeters for a frame size 56 is particularly striking. In conjunction with the 545 millimeter long seat tube and the 547 millimeter long top tube, this results in a sporty, upright seating position - not for everyone.
The rear end is extremely laterally stiff and although the stays are anything but short at 415 millimeters, it shows Endurance CF 9.0 SL quite agile in acceleration. This is not only pleasant on the flat, but also on descents. The genes that the Koblenz engineers have incorporated into the bike also make it a nimble speedster here.
To his brand brothers Ultimate and Aeroad It doesn't come close, but it doesn't want to. Rather want that Endurance CF 9.0 SL shine in the long run and, if possible, swallow one or the other punch. And that's what makes it brilliant. In the seat area, in addition to the patented Maximus seat tube, there is also the one developed together with Ergon VCLS Post 2.0-seat post contributes to the comfortable ride.
Conclusion
The canyon Endurance CF 9.0 SL is a comfort racer that conceptually goes its own way. In this way, the Koblenz stiffness is combined with dampening performance aspects in areas that do not detract from the driving experience. The bike accelerates extremely well and is easy to control. The directional stability is impressive. Friends of the criterium might want a lower front end – and therefore more pressure on the front wheel – but marathon riders who love the long and heavy gran fondos will probably be delighted by the bike in every respect.
