Cycling: The Slovenian Simon Spilak gave the Katusha team its second victory in two days. On the fifth section of the Critérium du Dauphine over 185 kilometers from Sisteron to La Mure, like his teammate Yuri Trofimov the day before, he prevailed as a soloist.
Spilak was the last survivor of a former breakaway group that had worn itself out in the final. If you consider the six mountain classifications that had to be mastered to the finish and the demanding final, it is hardly surprising that the favorites didn't give up anything at the end either.
One attack followed the next in the last few kilometers. Above all, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) was once again active. However, the Italian failed to break away decisively. Wilco Kelderman (Belkin) and Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEdge) had better luck. Both secured the places behind Spilak.
But already thirty kilometers before the finish, the favorites tried to put the overall leader Chris Froome (Sky) under pressure. Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) attacked together with his teammate Sergio Paolinho and was able to take almost a minute off the Briton. Team Sky was able to recover both of them to the finish, but they still revealed weaknesses.
Froome is still ahead in the overall standings. Contador follows in second place, with Keldermann in three at the same time.
