Cycling: Steve Cummings (Dimension Data) has won the final stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné. An impressive solo gave the Brit and his team a great win – it ended up being more than four minutes ahead of the first chasing group, whose sprint was won by Daniel Martin (Etixx – Quick-Step) ahead of Romain Bardet (AG2R). Chris Froome (Team Sky) defended the yellow jersey and, like last year, took the overall victory in the Dauphiné.
A few kilometers after the start, a large breakaway group was formed, which was supposed to control the events over long stretches of the difficult stage. 20 riders were able to break away from the main field, including Ryder Hesjedal (trek-Segafredo), Paul Voss (Bora-Argon 18) and Stephen Cummings, who later won the day. With more than 50 kilometers to go, the Dimension Data professional plucked up courage and attacked out of the big leading group – at first no other driver could and wanted to follow, then Cummings teammates Teklehaimanot and Boasson Hagen took over the lead in the group and helped their teammate an ever-increasing lead.
In the peloton, on the other hand, Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) tried everything to work his way up the overall standings and close the considerable gap to the leading Froome. Attacks rained down especially on the Col du Noyer: Contador tried twice to lure Froome out of his reserve, but the experienced Brit countered the attacks of his Spanish rival with impressive sovereignty. Bardet, Porte and Martin also tried several times to confuse the Sky captain, but at the latest when his teammates Henao, Landa and Poels had caught up again, the competition had to realize that Froome and Sky could no longer take the overall win.
With one last courageous attack, Dan Martin tried everything again on the final climb to the finish, a few riders, including Romain Bardet, were able to follow him, but in the end it wasn't enough: Froome defended his lead in front of Romain Bardet and Dan Martin, who was unlucky today Richie Porte (BMC) knocked off the podium. For the bravely fighting Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) it was only enough for fifth place. By the way, the best German was Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Argon 18) in 20th place - more than 8 minutes behind Froome.
