Test: Waterproof shoes are actually only known from winter. The materials are too thick to leave a good impression on the foot even during the three warm seasons - one would think so...
The component giant Shimano sees it differently and sends it along XC50N an MTB shoe into the race that wants to correct this prejudice.
equipment and practice
It is well known that the Japanese build excellent circuits. But Shimano has also grown in the clothing sector in recent years. The XC50N shows this. It is identical in construction to its model brother, the XC50. However, both differ in the materials used. There is no conventional ventilation mesh in the toe area. Instead, Shimano uses a Kevlar fabric here. This is to prevent cold wind, water and mud from penetrating the shoe.
On the first ride in January it felt like 5 degrees Celsius. And the shoe kept what it promised. Neither wind nor heavy splashing water have been able to harm him since then. Even in the deepest mud, it cuts a very good figure and ensures dry and warm feet at all times.
With its extremely coarse but slightly flexible sole, it turns running passages in the mud into child's play. The shoe literally digs into the mud. With the easy-to-use ratchet, the shoe can be perfectly adjusted to the foot.
On long runs, however, the small gap in the ankle area can cause it to wear down or become slightly irritated at first. However, this will happen after a short period of getting used to it.
But the really special thing is the foot climate. Because if you think that a shoe without ventilation guarantees sweaty feet, the teaches you XC50N a better one.
Conclusion
The Shimano XC50N is an all-rounder that can be used all year round. It keeps you warm, is absolutely waterproof and still ensures a pleasant foot climate. By the way, this makes it a real recommendation for all cyclocrossers. Because let's be honest: Who doesn't like to play in the mud?
