Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) single-handedly won stage two of the Tour of the Basque Country. After 155 kilometers from Ordizia to Dantxarinea he was half a minute ahead of the remaining field. Briton Ben Swift (Sky) won the sprint for second place ahead of Martin's Polish teammate Michal Kwiatkowski.

Martin had already broken away from the field in the first twenty kilometers along with his teammate Jan Bakelants, as well as Bob Jungels (Trek Factory Racing), Maxime Monfort (Lotto-Belisol), Gorka Izagirre (Movistar Team) and David Malacarne (Europcar). After preparatory work by Bakelandts, he broke away from his competitors in the last few kilometers and brought home a well-deserved victory.

In the field, the Tinkoff-Saxo team around overall leader Alberto Contador took it easy. Only in the last few kilometers did the breakaways start to be pursued more energetically. But while you could catch much of the group, Martin proved why he's the reigning ITT World Champion.
