Ben Swift gave British team Sky a win on stage five of the Tour of the Basque Country. After 160 kilometers from Eibar to Xemein, he prevailed in the sprint ahead of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Michal Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).
The stage featured five climbs again, with an illustrious breakaway group including Michael Albasini (Orica-GreenEdge), Philippe Gilbert (BMC), Warren Barguil (Giant-Shimano) and Luis León Sánchez (Caja Rural-RGA) taking advantage of this wanted to do. However in vain. On the final climb of the day, Bauke Mollema (Belkin), Tim Wellens (Lotto Belisol) and Bob Jungels (Trek) were the last remaining of the group.
The main reason for this was the speed work of the Movistar team. Its captain tried to make up time on Contador. However, this literally stuck to the rear wheel of the southern Spaniard and defended his overall lead. Contador only separates tomorrow's time trial from the overall victory of the Tour of the Basque Country.
