Mark Cavendish is the first overall leader of this year's edition of Tirreno-Adriatico. The Brit was the first driver of his Omega Pharma-QuickStep team to cross the finish line. The team dominated the opening time trial of the tour and thus lived up to its world championship title in this discipline.

After 18 kilometers from Donoratico to San Vincenzo, Cavendish and his teammates, including reigning World Time Trial Champion Tony Martin, were eleven seconds ahead of Orica-GreenEdge and eighteen ahead of Movistar. The German team NetApp-Endura finished fourteenth, 53 seconds behind.
