Italy's Sacha Modolo gave his Lampre-Merida team a win on day two of Challenge Mallorca. Unlike the day before at the Trofeo Palma, where in the end the finish photo decided in his favour, there was no doubt in Santanyi, the finish of the Trofeo Ses Selines. After 183 kilometers, Modolo clearly prevailed on the uphill home stretch against the British Ben Swift (Sky) and the Belgian Gianni Meersman (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).
The winner of Milan-San Remo 2013, Gerald Ciolek (MTN-Qhubeka), also celebrated his season debut today. However, the fast-paced Pulheimer could not intervene in the final. About halfway through the race he fell and had to get off his bike prematurely.
Shortly after the start, a leading group of five broke away from the field. The quintet around the Czech champion Jan Barta (NetApp-Endura) then dominated large parts of the race, but was caught again twenty kilometers from the finish.
