As part of Hawk Bike Sales GmbH, the bicycle manufacturer Nox Cycles is known for its down-to-earth design, a design that makes no compromises when it comes to function. At the Eurobike 2013, the Berliners presented a completely revised product range. In addition to a new carbon fully, the ED 5.9C, we particularly liked the newly designed one EDT 5.9 in the eye. With very good equipment, a race-oriented geometry and larger wheels, a new bike genre is aimed at: the race enduro.
What is meant by this is an enduro bike that is supposed to be a bit better and, above all, faster in every respect. What it is all about and how the Nox EDT 5.9 We were able to find out in the past few weeks in the Berlin home of the bike how it fares in tough conditions.
//Furnishing
Compared to its predecessor, the Flux, the 2014 is coming EDT 5.9 much more dynamic therefore. However, the basic concept remains the same. You can choose between two pivot points for the damper and vary the spring deflection between 130 and 150 millimeters. With the hydroformed tube set you move with the times and create a completely new overall picture. The finish is simple and has subtle colored accents.
The features that the Nox can boast are up-to-date. This is how you use the little brother of Srams XX1, the X01-Group, for the drive. The chassis is also state-of-the-art. Here comes the RockShox Pike RCT3-Suspension fork on Monarch Plus RC3-Mufflers from the same company are used. This means you are well prepared for tricky situations. That the new Mavic Crossmax Enduro LTD 650Bsystem wheels also come in the yellow typical of both companies, giving the bike a coherent overall look.
The Berliners not only trust in Sram when it comes to the drive and chassis. This is also evident at the front and at the seat post. Here one is pleasantly wider at 730 millimeters lumberjack-Handlebars from the Sram subsidiary Truvativ installed. The handlebar is mounted in a 50 millimeter lumberjack-Stem. A Rock Shox that can be operated from the handlebars serves as the seat post Reverb for use. On this is located with the Selle Italia SL XC a saddle that is also widely used in the XC area. The tires are from Continental. During our testing were Mountain King in execution 27,5x2.4 Protection pulled onto the rims.
//In action
After the pedals are mounted, we set up the right setup. It's not lacking in opportunities. Rebound, rebound and compression, even the low-speed compression can be used on the new Blanket set. This means that the response behavior can be very finely adjusted to the individual conditions.
On the trails in Berlin's Grunewald, we want to get an impression of what that EDT 5.9 actually can. Admittedly, there aren't the highest mountains here, but there are also some steep climbs to be found here. Thanks to the fork, which can be lowered to 130 millimeters, you can master the altitude meters with a comfortable seating position and don't have to worry about a rising front wheel.
In general, the bike feels very compact. Also the broad translation of the X01 gives a good picture. It works well and always offers enough reserves. However, we rarely need the large 42-tooth sprocket of the wide-spread cassette in Berlin. Rocking of the rear end is hardly noticeable when the spring elements are closed. During short sprints, the bike almost feels a bit like a hardtail.
Arrived at the old radar station on the Teufelsberg, we open the fork and the damper completely. After all, now is the time for the real fun to begin. The 650B wheels are particularly noticeable in the first corners. They give the bike a noticeable portion of stability and the driver more safety. However, the bike does not lose any of its agility. On the contrary: the fork sets new standards with its sensitive response. It works so precisely that the tires literally stick to the ground. They come with a width of 2.4 inches Mountain King quite voluminous therefore. However, they offer a pleasant comfort and a lot of grip.
The bike handles fast sections, larger jumps and root areas with ease. The fork lacks a bit of end progression here. However, the air cartridge can be made smaller using a spacer, which can significantly improve performance in the end area.
Apart from that, the performance is consistent. The bike is agile, accelerates well and sits calmly on the trail even in fast sections. Criticisms of the Nox EDT 5.9 it is quite difficult to find. The bike has everything a good enduro needs. We can agree with the title Race-Enduro with a clear conscience, even if it is not one of the lightest bikes on the market at 13,1 kilograms. Something less would be desirable in this respect.
//Conclusion
With the new Nox proves that good enduro bikes can also be built in Berlin EDT 5.9. The bike leaves nothing to be desired, neither in terms of equipment nor in terms of performance. The sporty geometry and the well thought-out chassis encourage you to step on the gas. Because that's exactly where the bike feels most comfortable. In view of the 3.999 euros, you get a no-frills, fully-fledged enduro here – one that sets standards.
