cycling: Ironman Arizona: Del Corral and Gajer dupe competition

18 November 2013 by Veit Hammer

At the Ironman Arizona, the Spaniard Victor Del Corral once again demonstrated his current good form and thus secured further points in the Kona Pro ranking. At the second Ironman after Belgian Frederik Van Lierde's spectacular Hawaii victory, other well-known athletes, along with Del Corral, also sought their chance under the Arizona sun.

Things initially went well for the German Johann Ackermann in particular. He came from Tempe Town Lake in the leading group, but was beaten on the bike by American Jordan Rapp, who set the bike pace together with Canadian Trevor Wurtele and finished with a time of 4:14:46 hours set a new record. There wasn't much to see of Del Corral at this point. In the meantime, he was almost five minutes behind. Twenty kilometers from the finish, however, he made contact with Rapp and subsequently left him behind. The American could still be happy about second place. Jens Petersen-Bach from Denmark was third. The best German was Marc Dülsen from Stuttgart in seventh place.

From a German point of view, things went better for the women. Thanks to an excellent day's performance, Julia Gajer prevailed against the American Meredith Kessler. He was the first to get out of the water and was able to extend their lead over Gajer to about ten minutes on the bike course. Nevertheless, this should not be enough for her in the end. Because Gajer literally ran away from everyone during the final marathon. With five kilometers to go, it was the Danish Michelle Vesterby who ran just behind Kessler. Shortly thereafter, Kessler also lost her position to Gajer.
