Has there ever been such a difficult third week in the Tour de France? Today's 17th stage is the prelude to a top-class climbing festival. Coming from the rest day, the drivers are sent to the first difficult stage in the Alps. This leads over 161 kilometers with five mountain classifications, so the legs should reach operating temperature as quickly as possible. Things get serious after the refreshment station in Beauvezer, when the mighty Col d'Allos begins, a veteran of Tour de France history.
As early as 1911, the Tour of France led over the 2.250 meter high giant. After the summit, a technically demanding descent on a narrow road awaits, before the six-kilometer final climb begins without a recovery phase. The combination of Allos and mountain finish at Pra Loup was last driven in 1975. In a dramatic stage, Eddy Merckx lost the yellow jersey to Bernard Thévenet, who also triumphed in Paris. Merckx should never wear yellow again.
