Performance and comfort in extremely cold conditions: Shimano Infinium Primaloft gloves in the test

15 December 2023 by the editorial office

Shimano Infinium

Shimano Infinium Primaloft gloves in the test: When it comes down to it, Shimano likes to rely on well-known components, such as the Infinium Primaloft Gloves.

The gloves, designed for temperatures below freezing down to -5°C, have Primaloft Gold 200 insulation on the backhand and thumb. This is intended to guarantee permanently warm fingers. To prevent icy winds from driving the heat out of the insulation, the outer shell is made of windproof Gore-Tex Infinium. But be careful, if you think of a waterproof membrane when you hear the name Gore-Tex, you are wrong. The claim of Gore-Tex Infinium is about combining comfort and performance. So this is not the well-known waterproof membrane.

The palm made of synthetic leather is equipped with a padding made of PORON XRD, a shock-absorbing foam, on the ball of the hand and at the transition from the metacarpal to the fingers. In addition, silicone prints are applied between the thumb and index finger.

He keeps what he promises!

If you hold it Shimano Infinium Primaloft Gloves in your hands for the first time, they are very reminiscent of simple ski gloves. The stretch waistband can be stretched widely and makes it easy to put on. When you put it on, you immediately feel protected from the cold, but you have unrestricted freedom of movement. The gloves fit like a glove, but we recommend taking one size larger.

On the bike, Gore-Tex Infinium technology keeps its promise. Your fingers stay pleasantly warm and the wind doesn't get in. Thanks to the stretchy outer material, the grip is good for a glove with an insulating layer. The brake and shift lever are also easy to operate with the Shimano Infinium. The PRODON XRD further increases comfort because, in addition to the padding, it provides additional insulation in the appropriate areas. In addition to the brand names Shimano and Gore-Tex Infinium, the printed silicone strips also ensure reflective visibility. However, the degree of reflection of the strips is lower than with conventional reflector materials. Finally, it is positive to mention the upper material chosen on the thumb, which is particularly suitable as a wiping finger for glasses.
